UAE Driving School Launches First-Ever Climate-Friendly Lessons

UAE Driving School Introduces First Carbon-Neutral Driving Lessons

In a groundbreaking step toward sustainable mobility, the Emirates Driving Company (EDC) in Abu Dhabi has launched Green Drive, the UAE’s first carbon-neutral driving training programme. Developed in collaboration with a climate-tech firm, CarbonSifr, the initiative provides students with a practical driving experience that achieves net-zero carbon emissions at no additional cost.

The launch of Green Drive reflects the UAE’s broader commitment to align transportation and education with the country’s long-term climate goals. For new learners, this means that their very first driving lessons carry an added purpose: they are not only preparing to be safe and responsible on the road but also contributing to a future with cleaner air and healthier communities. By weaving sustainability into the early stages of driver education, EDC is helping students see that the choices they make behind the wheel have an impact far beyond their own journey.

A First for the Region

What makes Green Drive stand out is that it places sustainability directly into the everyday experience of learning to drive. While eco-friendly transport conversations often focus on electric cars or infrastructure, this programme starts with people. Every student gets a chance to see how their lessons can be both practical and planet-friendly, which makes climate responsibility feel tangible rather than abstract. For many, it may be their first real encounter with the idea that safer driving and a greener world are deeply connected. By beginning at the learner stage, EDC is creating a ripple effect that could influence how an entire generation approaches mobility.

Driving Toward Sustainability

EDC, a leading provider of pre-licensing driver education in Abu Dhabi, has long emphasised that safer roads and climate responsibility must go hand in hand. Announcing the programme, EDC CEO Khaled Al Shemeili explained:
“Green Drive is more than an initiative – it’s a statement that climate responsibility belongs in every part of life, including behind the wheel.”

CarbonSifr, the UAE-based climate-tech partner, ensures the programme’s environmental integrity through advanced carbon accounting and offsetting. Onur Elgun, CEO of CarbonSifr, described the collaboration as:
“Bringing together innovation, data, and climate action in a simple, accessible way.”

How “Green Drive” Works

  • Carbon Footprint Calculation
Each student’s training session is assessed using internationally recognised carbon-accounting standards. Variables such as fuel type, distance, and vehicle usage are factored into the emission estimate.
  • Carbon Offsetting
All resulting emissions are offset through investments in verified environmental projects that guarantee permanent and transparent carbon removal, at no extra charge to participants.
  • Recognition for Students
After completing the programme, students receive a Certificate of Appreciation acknowledging their role in advancing sustainable driver education.

Inclusive and Scalable by Design

  • Broad Vehicle Applicability
Unlike other initiatives, which are limited to electric or hybrid vehicles, Green Drive accommodates any vehicle type, ensuring inclusivity and wider environmental impact.
  • Initial Roll-Out and Expansion
Currently available only to students enrolled in EDC’s VIP car licence packages, the programme is expected to expand to additional licence types and training modules in the near future.

Sustainability Credentials

EDC’s commitment to responsible business practices has already earned it a AAA sustainability rating, the highest ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance) accolade from global agencies. This reinforces the company’s long-term commitment to integrating sustainability into every aspect of its operations.

Impact on Sustainability

  • Educational and Environmental Benefits
Green Drive not only equips learners with essential driving skills but raises awareness about environmental responsibility, helping shape a generation of eco-conscious drivers.
  • Market Differentiation
Offering carbon-neutral training at no additional cost positions EDC as a leader in sustainable education, appealing to individual learners as well as corporate clients prioritising ESG values.
  • Scalability and Replicability
With its vehicle-agnostic design, Green Drive presents a replicable model for driver education globally, creating pathways for other institutions to adopt similar sustainability frameworks.

Towards a Sustainable Future

Green Drive represents a major shift in driver education, where sustainability is not an add-on but a foundation. By combining carbon accounting, offsetting, and inclusive program design, Emirates Driving Company and CarbonSifr are setting a new benchmark in driving instruction. As the initiative scales, it holds the potential to transform not just the driver training in the UAE but the future of sustainable mobility worldwide.
